Biography

Henry Thomas Coles was born in 1846 in Taunton, Somerset, England to Robert Coles and Hester (Morris/Morrish) Coles. His birth was registered in Taunton in the first quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Morris.[1]

Henry Thomas Coles, son of Robert & "Hannah" [Hester], residing at Shuttern, was christened on 22 Feb 1846 in Taunton.[2]

In 1851 Henry Thomas Coles (age 5, Scholar) lived at Shuttern in Taunton St Mary Mag with his father Robert (43, Road Man), mother Hester (51), and five siblings: John (19, Road Man), Charles (17, Road Man), Robert (14, Road Man), James (19 [~10], Scholar), and Mary Ann (8, Scholar).[3][4]

In 1861 Henry Coles (age 15, General Labourer) lived at Shuttern in Taunton St Mary Mag with his father Robert (54, Scavenger Under Board of Health) and mother Hester (60).[5][6]

In 1871 Henry Thomas Coles (age 25, Turncock To Water Company) was a lodger at Westgate Street in Taunton St Mary.[7]

Henry Thomas Coles married Anne Skinner in 1871. The marriage was registered in Taunton in the second quarter of the year.[8]

In 1891 Henry T Coles (age 45, Water Works Manager) lived at 8 Mary St in Taunton St Mary Magdalen with his wife Annie (40) and ten children: Henry J (18, Appren Engine Fitting), Annie E (17, Dressmaker), Ellen R (15, Dressmakers Apprentice), Agnes (14, Scholar), Mabel (12, Scholar), Ernest G (9, Scholar), Beatrice M (9, Scholar), Florence L (7, Scholar), Winnifred M (6, Scholar), and Jessie (4, Scholar).[11][12]

In 1901 Henry T Coles (age 55, Water Works Manager & Capt Fire Brigade) lived at Mary Street in Taunton with eight of his children: Henry J (28, Water Inspector & Engineer Fire Brigade), Annie L (27, Dressmaker), Mabel (22), Ernest G (19, Builder's Apprentice), Beatrice M (19, Dressmaker), Florence L (17, Mantle Maker), Winifred M (16), and Jessie (14).[13] Henry's wife Annie (51, Living On Own Means) and daughter Ellen R (26, Dressmaker) were visitors at Alexandra Road in Devonport, Devon in the household of George Roch.

In 1911 Henry Thomas Coles (age 65, Waterworks Manager) lived in Taunton St Mary Magdalene with his wife Annie (60) and four daughters: Annie Louisa (37, Dressmaker), Mabel (32), Florence Lilian (27, Shorthand Teacher & Typist), and Jessie (24, Clerk for Drapery & House Furnishing).[14]

Henry was the executor of his brother James' estate in 1920:

"COLES James Yarde of St. Just Cornwall died 23 August 1919 Probate London 14 February [1920] to Henry Thomas Coles waterworks manager. Effects £2974 9s. 3d."[15]
Henry's wife passed away in 1933:

"COLES Annie of 10 Mary-street Taunton (wife of Henry Thomas Coles) died 4 Aptil 1933 Administration Taunton 19 June to Henry Thomas Coles consulting water works engineer. Effects £145 3s. 7d."[16]
In 1939 Henry T Coles (born in 1846) lived at 10 Mary Street in Taunton - also at the same address were three of his daughters: Annie L Coles (1873), Mabel Coles (1878), and Beatrice M Coles (1881).[17]

Henry T Coles passed away on 27 Nov 1939, aged 93 years. His death was registered in Taunton in the last quarter of the year.[18]

"COLES Henry Thomas of Heidelberg Mary-street Taunton died 27 November 1939 Probate Bodmin 26 February [1940] to Ernest Gilbert Coles waterworks manager and Henry Edward Sandry company director. Effects £4498 0s. 5d."[19]
