Richard Birtwistle born 1787, the fourth son of James and Betty, married Ann Wensley in 1807 and of their children, William born 1808, is the founder of the family who became important Cotton Manufacturers of Blackburn and later at Darwen, Preston and Great Harwood, and Elizabeth Birtwistle, born 1810, a daughter of Richard and Ann, married William Slater in 1834, and descendants of their family also became successful Cotton Manufacturers of Blackburn and Preston.
