David Birtwistle born 1791, the youngest son of James and Betty, married Lettice Hayes in 1811 and settled at Lower Fold and of their family, William their eldest son, born in 1816, was the founder of the firm that took over St. Lawrence and Delph Road Mill and were to become the most important Cotton Manufacturers of Great Harwood and, after 1880, expanded into Blackburn and Preston. David and Linty also had two daughters. Elizabeth who married David Taylor in 1837, and Mercy who married John Noble in 1852, both of whom were to found successful cotton manufacturing enterprises.
