Narrative

Richard was born in 1613 and educated at Exeter College, Oxford, and at the Middle Temple, where at christmas 1636, he led the masque presented to King Charles the 1st and was knighted after the performance. When the Civil War broke out in 1642 Sir Richard was appointed Colonel of the Regiment of Foot in the Hundred of Powder.
Sir Richard was commissioned by King Charles the 1st to coin money and set up a mint at Truro. On 3rd January, 1644 he received a second commission to erect a mint at Exeter and was appointed Master of the Mint. Coin was made from plate contributed by Royalist supporters. He was also in command of a fort erected on the Dennis Head at the mouth of the Helford river of which traces remain. In 1664 King Charles the 1st conferred a Baronetcy on him in reward for his services.
King Charles the 2nd subsequently made him a gentleman of the Privy Chamber and Captain of St. Mawes Castle
