Narrative

James Yarde Coles was born in 1840 in Norton Fitzwarren, near Taunton, Somerset, England to Robert Coles and Hester "Ann" (Morris/Morrish) Coles. His birth was registered in Taunton in the first quarter of the year, with mother's maiden name Morrish.[1]

James Yard Coles, son of Robert, a laborer, & Hester, residing at Norton, was christened on 2 Feb 1840 at All Saints in Norton Fitzwarren.[2]

In 1841 James Coles (age 1) lived at Langford in Norton Fitzwarren with his father Robart (33, Labourer), mother Ann (34 [~40]), and three brothers: John (10), Chas (7), and Robt (4).[3][4]

In 1851 James Coles (age 19 [~11], Scholar) lived at Shuttern in Taunton St Mary Mag with his father Robert (43, Road Man), mother Hester (51), and five siblings: John (19, Road Man), Charles (17, Road Man), Robert (14, Road Man), Mary Ann (8, Scholar), and Henry Thomas (5, Scholar).[5][6]

In 1861 James Coles (age 21, Railway Laborer) lived at Upper High St, Rices Court in Taunton St Mary Mag with his brother Charles (28, Agricultl Laborer), sister-in-law Susan (25, Dressmaker), niece Mary Ann (2), and nephew Robert William (2 months).[7][8]

James Coles (age 22, Bachelor, Labourer, residing at North Town, son of Robert Coles, Labourer) and Hannah Rugg (age 21, Spinster, residing at North Town, daughter of Nicholas Rugg, Coachman) were married on 26 Jan 1862 at St James in Taunton - the witnesses were Charles Coles & Mary Beale.[9] The marriage was registered in Taunton in the first quarter of the year.[10]

In 1871 James Coles (age 31, Millers Porter) lived at Chibbetts Court Shuttern in Taunton St Mary Magdalene with his wife Hannah (30, Laundress) and four children: Alice Mary (7, Scholar), Elizabeth Ann (5, Scholar), Frederick James (2), and Sydney Henry (9 months) - they lived in the household of his widowed mother-in-law Elizabeth Rugg (68, Laundress).[11]

In 1881 James Yard Coles (age 41, Millers Porter) lived at Upper High Street Hewers Ct in Taunton St Mary Magdalen with his wife Hannah (40) and seven children: Alice Mary (17, S Machinist), Elizth Ann (15, Scholar), Fredk Jas (12, Scholar), Sidney Hy (10, Scholar), Hannah Ady (8, Scholar), Joe (3, Scholar), and Herbert John (1), as well as his mother-in-law Elizabeth Rugg (77, Laundress Formerly).[12][13]

In 1891 James Yard Coles (age 51, General Labourer) lived at 1 Court Upper High St in Taunton St Mary Magdalen with his wife Hannah (50), seven children: Ada (18, General Servant), Joe (13, Bakers Boy), Herbert J (11, Scholar), Laurence (9, Scholar), Emily K (8, Scholar), Hilda M (6, Scholar), and Alice Chown (27), son-in-law Henry Chown (20, Butcher), and grandson Roland H Chown (1).[14][15]

In 1901 James Y Coles (age 60, Contractor Water Works Serous) lived at Upper High Street in Taunton with his wife Hannah (60) and three children: Herbert J (21, Pipe Layer), Lawrence C (19, Shirt Cutter), and Emily K (18, Domestic), as well as visitor Lillie Coles (5).[16]

James' wife passed away in 1906.

In 1911 James Y Coles (age 71, Private Means) lived at Portland Cottage Court in Taunton St Mary Magdalene with his son Laurence L (29, Water & Sewage Contractor), two granddaughters [listed as daughters]: Marjorie (3) and Iris A (7), daughter-in-law Nelly (25, Private Means), and niece Lilly Coles (16, Student).[17]

James Y Coles passed away on 23 Aug 1919, aged 79 years. His death was registered in Penzance, Cornwall in the third quarter of the year.[18]

"COLES James Yarde of St. Just Cornwall died 23 August 1919 Probate London 14 February [1920] to Henry Thomas Coles waterworks manager. Effects £2974 9s. 3d."[19]
